From acquisition to platform development

Many of Volati’s platforms begin with a single well-run company with a strong market position and clear development potential. Through continued operational development and selective add-on acquisitions, these businesses grow into broader platforms with leading positions within their respective niches over time. The examples below reflect several of the principles that characterise Volati’s acquisition model: long-term ownership, decentralised responsibility, and growth through continued development and add-on acquisitions.

Tornum: The first step

The acquisition of the grain handling systems manufacturer Tornum in 2004 marked an early step in shaping Volati’s business model. The company combined financial stability with clear opportunities for expansion, particularly in Eastern Europe.

Following the strengthening of the organisation, the expansion was executed and Tornum tripled sales between 2004 and 2008. The company remains part of Volati and is today the largest dryer supplier in Europe and one of the largest players in its segment within grain systems.

The acquisition also reflected several of the principles that continue to guide Volati: acquiring financially stable companies with development and growth potential, operating in specialised sectors where competition for assets is more limited.

Tornum Group is today our platform for specialised companies within grain handling, storage and processing across agriculture and industry.

Lomond Industrier: Foundation of Salix Group

In 2015, Volati acquired Lomond Industrier (now Salix Group), a well-managed group with strong brands in the Nordic building materials sector. The acquisition was identified early on as a potential platform for further development.

Patrik Wahlén, one of Volati’s founders, recalls the initial reaction to the opportunity: ‘Oh, is Lomond for sale?’

Lomond had an established operational structure, including a centralised logistics platform in Malmö, supporting high volumes and efficient distribution. The group supplies customers such as XL-Bygg, Woody and Beijer, and processes significant volumes across the Nordic region.

The transaction was complex and executed within a short timeframe, following a focused due diligence process.

Since the acquisition, Lomond has developed into Salix Group, which today operates, develops and acquires companies within building and industry-related products, including hardware, consumables, materials and packaging. Through continued and selective acquisitions, the group has expanded across multiple markets.

In 2026, Salix Group was listed separately on Nasdaq Stockholm.

T-Emballage: Building on an entrepreneurial legacy

Volati acquired the family-owned company T-Emballage, based in Vetlanda, Sweden, in 2017. The company is today part of Salix Group.

"T-Emballage had long been on our "golden list" of companies we would like to acquire. It's a really well-run company with a good reputation in the industry, fine products and good profitability. We're proud to take over the rudder of Håkan and Elisabeth Thuresson's life's work," says Patrik Wahlén, founder and member of Volati's Board of Directors.

T-Emballage had identified opportunities to grow through add-on acquisitions. As part of Volati, these opportunities could be pursued within an established platform structure and with access to capital.

"We hit it off at our first meeting and we discovered that we shared the same values and view of the company. We could see that sale to Volati could be a way for T-Emballage to develop its activities and I'm certain that this is a good deal for the company and the staff," says Håkan Thuresson, former principal owner of T-Emballage.

Ettiketto Group: Five add-on acquisitions in 1.5 years

The acquisition of Ettiketto in 2011 formed the basis for what is today Ettiketto Group, a platform for continued development and acquisitions in labelling. The group provides labelling solutions, including self-adhesive labels and related equipment.

Between June 2020 and January 2022, five add-on acquisitions were completed in Sweden and Norway. These strengthened the group’s market position, expanded its geographic presence and broadened its offering. The transactions have built scale within selected segments and enabled entry into new geographic markets. At the same time, the broader offering has strengthened the group’s position with both existing and new customers.

The acquisitions were aligned with the group’s growth strategy and illustrate how platforms within Volati are developed over time. More recently, Ettiketto Group has expanded into new markets in Germany and the Netherlands.
